Falcon Hockey Banquet Celebrates Seniors and Season

On April 6, 2013 the Falcons held their annual banquet to honor the past season and seniors who are graduating next month.

This year’s “Voice of Falcon Hockey” Chris Cournan emceed the event which was held at the Stroh Center on campus. Cournan began the program recapping the season highlighting the successes and struggles the team experienced in this year’s campaign. The Falcon’s upset their first round opponent for a third year in a row, this year in Sault Ste. Marie, MI against Lake Superior State.

Next, each player was introduced by Cournan. The only player absent was Bobby Shea who is with the Reading Royals of the ECHL (and has signed an official contract by the team). A highlight video was shown on the Stroh center video board after the player introductions showing key plays, goals, and hits from the season.

Head Coach Chris Bergeron took the podium next, thanking the parents, Jim Ruehl and Jack Vivian, the BGSU athletic department, his support staff, the coaches and their wives, and his own family. Bergeron showed emotion as he thanked the families and parents of the players for their support and trust letting the players attend BGSU. Bergeron’s fiery side was evident too as he looked ahead to the next season as the Falcon’s move to the WCHA, assuring the supporters attending that the team would continue to improve and would be a program the community could continue to be proud of.

After Coach Bergeron’s remarks, the annual awards were presented. Here are this year’s recipients:

With all of the awards handed it out, the senior class of 2013 was recognized individually. Andrew Hammond, Ryan Peltoma, and Marc Rodriguez gave speeches thanking those who have supported and helped them throughout their four year journey at BGSU. The seniors were gifted their jersey and a watch. Accepting his sweater and watch for Bobby Shea was his mother Jackie Shea. This class will always be thanked for sticking with the program during a very uncertain time as the university considered cutting the program the spring before their freshman season.

The banquet concluded with another video on the video board, this time honoring the seniors for their contributions to the program.

The Falcons will return to the ice for the 2013-2014 season on October 5th. No opponent has been announced yet.
