The Falcons opened their 2013-2014 campaign with an offensive onslaught, beating the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 7-1.
Seven different Falcons scored goals, racking up 46 shots on the way to the deciding victory. All three goaltenders saw time in net, with sophomore Tommy Burke playing the first period, freshman Tomas Sholl playing a period and a half before senior Scott Zacharias finished the game.
Bowling Green started the scoring early, as Cam Wojtala scored just 36 seconds into the first period. The Falcons would double their lead as Ben Murphy scored high on the glove side at 9:16.
The Falcons looked shakier in the second period but still managed to score three goals on an undermatched Golden Hawk squad. Bryce Williamson, Matt Pohlkamp, Pierre-Luc Mercier notched their first goals of the new campaign. Laurier broke the shutout at 10:17 as Greg Lamoureux beat the freshman Sholl.
The Falcons would finish off the game in the third thanks to a short-handed marker by Ryan Carpenter and Dan DeSalvo’s goal to make it 7-1.
Bergeron was happy with the team’s game overall: “We want the effort and intensity to be good and it was.” The team played a quick style, pushing forward on the rush throughout the game. “Our offensive zone play was really good…We’re trying to focus on our transition game.” Murphy’s goal was a clear example as Murphy pushed the puck along the half boards before cutting in and beating the goaltender.
Senior Bryce Williamson was happy with what he saw too: “We stuck to the gameplan. Our intensity was good and we were excited to play someone else.”
