Through forty minutes it looked like the Falcons were going to be shutout for the second game in a row. Three Falcon goals and two goals by Ferris took the game 65 minutes for a tie.
Tommy Burke made the start in net for the Falcons, stopping 28 of 31 shots. CJ Motte was tested often and stopped 37 of 40 attempts.
Bowling Green continued their strong first period trend as they tested Motte 11 times, including two power plays. Burke faced six shots in the opening frame but made a critical error in the beginning of the second period.
The Falcon netminder came out to play a long clear on a Falcon powerplay. Burke’s pass to one of his forwards was intercepted by Chad McDonald who found a wide open net at 2:20 of the middle period.
Bowling Green had no shortage of chances in the second period with two more power play chances and 15 total shots on the stellar Motte. Burke, while not tested often still made big saves, especially at the end of the period tallying nine saves in the second.
The Falcons finally solved Motte at 5:02 of the third. Pierre-Luc Mercier passed across the blueline to Connor Kucera who beat a screened Motte. Bowling Green added their second goal at 13:10. Adam Berkle made a power move to get around a bulldog defender and got a back hand shot on net. Cam Wojtala collected the rebound and found the back of the net.
BG doubled their lead at 15:14 thanks to Brent Tate. Ralfs Freibergs shot a low attempt that Tate deflected above Motte. Ferris State would draw within one goal at 18:04 with a goal by Garrett Thompson.
With CJ Motte pulled for the final minute of play the Bulldogs were able to tie the game on a Cory Kane goal and send the contest to overtime and an eventual tie.
Coach Bergeron talked about the offense heavy third period during the post game: “The third period we definitely took it up a level which we’re very excited about. We feel when we play like that we’re a tough team to handle.” About the strong play of Motte, “We knew were going to have to get him moving left to right. It’s that second effort…we’ve been telling our guys all week that’s the type of night it would be with this goaltender.”
Senior captain Cam Wojtala sees consistency being the key for two points on Saturday. “We need to be more consistent. We had spurts in the first two periods and then we played well in the beginning of the third. But we have to make sure that’s a full 60 minutes.” Connor Kucera agreed with the sixty minute goal: “We didn’t finish what we started with that run in the third period. We couldn’t finish out the victory there.”
The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday at 7:07pm.
