On Saturday afternoon the Toledo Walleye hosted BGSU hockey and Toledo Walleye season ticket holders at an open house event at Fifth Third Field. The downtown baseball stadium will host a week of outdoor hockey events including the BGSU Falcons playing Robert Morris University of Pennsylvania on January 3, 2014.
“From day one we wanted Bowling Green involved with Winterfest” Mike Keedy, the Manager of Special Events for the Toledo Mud Hens, said during a brief Q&A session. “When you see the layout of the ice the juices start flowing and the excitement comes” head Falcon coach Chris Bergeron said during the event.
Details about ticketing and the events surrounding the event are starting to be finalized. Those with Falcon hockey season tickets will have seats located in the “club” section of Fifth Third Field. The second deck features better sightless, padded seats, and access to the indoor “BirdCage” bar area. These tickets will sell for $25 individually while those sitting in the lower deck will pay $15 for their seats. Student seating is still being worked out as far as location goes but will only cost $5 per seat.
As special as the event will be for the fans it’s even more of a spectacle for the players involved. “It’s special. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can’t wait” Falcon defenseman and Toledo native Rusty Hafner said at the event.
Matching up with the Falcons will be the Robert Morris Colonials. While admittedly fans might have hoped for a matchup with a team like Miami or Ohio State the Colonials will provide a tough test of the Falcons. Robert Morris won the Atlantic Hockey Conference tournament in 2014 and made an appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four tournament. The Falcons last played the Colonials at least years Three Rivers Classic in the consolation game. The Falcons held on and took a 3-2 win from the hosts.
