Bowling Green’s Chris Nell is the Western Collegiate Hockey Association rookie of the week, the league announced Monday.

The freshman goalie had 26 saves in a 5-0 win Saturday at Northern Michigan, ranked 19th last week.

Nell had 10 saves in each of the first two periods, and helped the Falcons kill off all four NMU power plays in the game.

The 6-foot-1, 178-pounder helped BG kill off a 5-minute major in the first period when the game was still scoreless, and a 5 on 3 for 51 seconds in the third period when BG held a 4-0 lead.

Nell, a native of Green Bay, Wis., is 5-0 overall with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .960 save percentage.

In WCHA games, Nell is 3-0 with a 0.67 goals-against and a .976 save percentage.

Nell has two shutouts, both in league play.
