While Robert Morris and Bowling Green were probably hoping for more of a winter-like atmosphere in their first outdoor game, the teams still have a game that they’ll probably remember for the rest of their lives.
Conditions for both team’s first outdoor game were a worst case scenario as a constant freezing rain peppered the teams and the playing surface throughout the contest.
Bowling Green started freshman Chris Nell in net who stopped 34 of 36 attempts. Robert Morris countered with junior Terry Shafter who made 24 saves on 26 shots.
The Falcons struck first at 17:44 while shorthanded. Pierre-Luc Mercier started a breakaway with Matt Pohlkamp to his right. Mercier skated down near the far face-off circle before passing across the rain-soaked ice to Pohlkamp. The sophomore forward notched his fifth goal of the season.
Nell stopped all six shots he faced in the first period while Shafer turned aside six of seven.
The Falcons picked up their second goal of the game at 17:53 of the second period. Dan DeSalvo skated with the puck behind the net. He backhanded a pass to Mark Friedman who fired an initial shot on Shafer. Adam Berkle was Johnny-on-the-spot for the rebound and buried the loose puck for his third goal of the season.
Robert Morris challenged Nell 12 times in the second period with the freshman goaltender stopping them. Shafer managed to stop 8 of 9 attempts.
The Colonials scored their first goal of the game at 8:58 of the third period. Matt Cope passed to Jeff Jones from the point. Jones passed across the face-off circles to Greg Gibson who buried a one-timer.
Robert Morris got their tying goal at 10:53 with another great passing play as Daniel Leavens left a great drop pass for Brady Ferguson who buried a point blank opportunity.
Neither team scored for the rest of the period and the game went to an overtime period, where neither team could find the net either and ended in a tie.
With the tie Bowling Green moves to 11-3-3 on the season while Robert Morris stands at 12-3-4. The teams will conclude their series Sunday at 7:05pm at Robert Morris.
– Despite committing seven penalties the Falcons killed off every Colonial power play and held them to only 10 total shots with the man advantage.
– With Pohlkamp’s goal he moves into a tie (Brandon Hawkins) for second on the team with six markers.
– Chris Nell’s record moves to 5-0-1 with a .945 save percentage and 1.65 GAA. He sits third nationally in both of those categories (minimum 33% games played).
