The Falcons were vastly outshot but still managed to beat one of the best goaltenders in the country in Ferris State’s C.J. Motte.
C.J. Motte started in net for Ferris State while Bowling Green started Tommy Burke.
Brandon Hawkins opened the scoring at 6:46 of the first period. Connor Kucera fed the puck to the freshman forward who skated across the slot. Hawkins skated backwards for a step before shooting away from his momentum. The puck caught a bit of C.J. Motte’s glove but found the net for Hawkins’ 10th goal of the season.
Motte stopped ten of eleven shots he faced while Burke stopped all twelve Bulldog attempts.
The Falcons scored their second goal of the game at 1:51 of the second period. Mark Friedman skated along the boards towards the gaol line. He fed Ben Greiner who re-directed the pass onto Motte. The senior goaltender made an initial save but it fluttered up in the air, landing in the net.
The Falcons extended their lead to 3-0 at 16:55 of the second period. Nolan Valleau had pinched in and taken a pass from Dan DeSalvo. Valleau passed across the doorstop to Brent Tate who buried a no-doubt wrist shot past Motte.
Motte stopped five of seven Falcon attempts in the period while Burke was perfect on 19 attempts.
Matt Pohlkamp scored the Falcon’s fourth goal of the game at 10:44 of the third period. Sean Walker skated along the boards before attempting a pass to Pohlkamp who was skating onto the net. His pass caught the stick of Ferris State’s Sean O’Rourke. The puck flipped over to Pohlkamp anyways, who had a wide open net to shoot at with Motte overcommitted to Pohlkamp’s original position.
The Bulldogs were finally able to get on the scoreboard at 11:22 of the third period. Zach Dorer wristed a shot on Burke that he initially saved. The rebound came to Kenny Babinsky who wristed the puck past Burke.
Neither team would strike again as the Falcons took game one of the weekend series from the Bulldogs. Tommy Burke stopped 13 of 14 Bulldog attempts in the third and ended the game with 43 saves on 44 shots. Motte stopped four of five Falcon shots and struggled to 19 saves on 23 attempts.
