Columbus, OH – On the 161st meeting between #16 Bowling Green and Ohio State the Falcons proved to be too much in a 6-3 victory. The game kicked off the Falcon’s 2015-2016 campaign.
BGSU senior and career leader in Goals Allowed Average (GAA) Tommy Burke started in net for the Falcons, making 27 saves on 30 attempts. Junior Christian Frey countered for the Buckeyes and stopped 29 saves on 33 Falcon attempts.
Jakob Reichert pick up the Falcon’s first goal of the season at 2:44 of the first period. Shane Bednard started the play keeping the puck in the Ohio State zone. He fed John Schilling who fired an initial shot on Frey. The rebound came to Reichert who powered the puck past the OSU goaltender for his third career marker.
Kevin Dufour scored the Falcon’s second goal at 8:05 of the second period. Matt Pohlkamp passed the puck to Braden Pears. The sophomore defenseman challenged Frey with a wrist shot that rebounded to Dufour who finished the play for his 23rd career goal.
The Buckeyes drew back to within one at 14:57 as Josh Healey found David Gust with a long stretch pass. Gust skated in on a breakaway and beat Burke after a series of dekes.
The Falcons ended the first period with 14 shots on net while the Buckeyes countered with seven.
The Falcons picked up their third goal at 11:44 of the second period. Freshman John Schilling scored his first career marker after wristing a shot on Frey that beat him five-hole.
Ben Murphy stretched the Falcon lead to 4-1 at 16:02 of the second period. After taking a pass from Dajon Mingo and then Brent Tate the senior forward skated across the slot before finishing a wrist shot under Frey’s blocker.
The Falcon’s finished the second period with seven shots on Frey. Ohio State challenged Burke ten times.
Ohio State struck back just 2:06 into the third period while on the power play. Nick Schilkey scored on a tic-tac-toe passing play with assists from Anthony Greco and Victor Björkung.
Matt Pohlkamp scored at 17:15 with an empty net goal. However, the Buckeyes responded just 14 seconds later as Nick Schilkey scored the Buckeye’s third marker.
Bowling Green managed to hold off Ohio State as Cooper scored another empty net goal for the Falcons.
Burke stopped 11 of 13 shots in the third period while Frey stopped all 12 Falcon shots he faced.
The Falcons and Buckeyes will conclude their series Saturday at 7:37pm in Bowling Green.
