Bowling Green, OH – In front of a crowd of 4,613 the Falcon seniors finished their regular season careers at the BGSU Ice Arena with a 6-2 win.

Chris Nell started in net for the Falcons and made 29 saves on 31 shots faced. Darren Smith got the start for Ferris State and made 26 saves on 31 shots.

First Period

The Bulldogs opened scoring at 10:02 of the first period. While shorthanded Zach Dorer caused a turnover in the Bulldog zone and fed the puck to Chad McDonald. McDonald skated the puck down the ice, and found Matt Robertson for a tip-in goal on a cross-crease pass.

The teams played a much tighter opening period than they did Friday, as the Falcons were held to just nine shots. The Bulldogs managed just eight shots on Nell.

Second Period

Brandon Hawkins broke the Falcon goal draught at 15:45 of the 2nd period. Mark Cooper found Hawkins, who skated behind the net, pivoted, and fired a low wrist shot that snuck beneath Smith’s pads for Hawkins’ 10th goal of the season.

The Falcons finished the second period with 10 shots on net, while the Bulldogs had 13 attempts.

Third Period

The Bulldogs re-took the lead 49 seconds into the third period. Kyle Schempp managed to tip home a centering pass by Corey Mackin.

But, the Falcons would again tie the game at 3:14 of the third period. Kevin Dufour collected a loose puck at center ice, skated in on a breakaway, and slipped a backhand shot five-hole for his 12th goal of the season.

Bowling Green took their first lead of the game at 5:13 of the third period. Sean Walker passed the puck from the far point to the near face-off circle, finding Mitch McLain. The sophomore forward shot a one-timer, beating Smith low for the 3-2 lead.

McLain picked up his second goal of the game at 9:30 of the third period to push the Falcon lead to 4-2. After Matt Pohlkamp fired an initial shot a scrum gathered at the net. McLain managed to muscle the puck past Smith for his sixth goal of the season.

With 90 seconds to play in the game Ferris State head coach Bob Daniels pulled Darren Smith for the extra attacker. But, a Mark Cooper empty net goal at 19:07 and a Brett D’Andrea goal with :35.3 to play sealed the win for the Falcons.

With the win the Falcons improve to 19-11-6, 15-6-5 on the season and have clinched home ice for the WCHA playoffs first round. The Bulldogs fall to 14-13-6, 12-10-4.

The Falcons will travel to Huntsville, AL next weekend to face the Chargers.
