RedHawks too much for Falcons in 4-1 loss

Bowling Green resumed its inconsistency Friday night before a crowd of 4,025 in the Ice Arena.

The Falcons didn’t play well en route to a 4-1 loss to Miami.

Miami played well from start to finish and scored the game’s final four goals to improve to 12-13-3 overall.

BG, ranked 19th nationally, fell to 16-10-6.

The Falcons return to action next weekend when they travel to Alaska (Fairbanks) for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.

Chris Nell was the starter in goal for the Falcons, while the RedHawks went with Jay Williams in goal.

First Period

The Falcons scored the only goal of the period at 11:42, converting on one of their three chances with the extra man. Brent Tate had the goal with a sweet deflection in front of Sean Walker’s shot from the left point.

Miami held a 16-8 edge in shots during the period.

Second Period

Miami struck twice in the period for a 2-1 lead.

Anthony Louis tied the game during a 5 on 3 power play with a one-timer from the right circle at 12:37.

The RedHawks then took the lead, just 2:38 later, when Sean Kuraly scored on a tip in front of the front. Scott Dornbrock’s shot from the center point started the play, with the puck going in after being deflected at least twice.

Miami dominated the period, outshooting BG by a 14-7 margin. Nell was outstanding in the period with 12 saves, robbing Miami on a number of point-blank chances.

Third Period

The RedHawks added an insurance goal for a 3-1 lead with 6:09 left. Kiefer Sherwood converted in front after controlling a loose puck in front.

With Nell on the bench for the sixth attacker, Matthew Caito added an empty-net goal for a 4-1 lead with 1:47 remaining.

The RedHawks held a 19-7 edge in shots during the period to finish the game with a 49-22 margin in shots. Nell was the best player in the game, making a career-high 45 saves.
