From the Editor: New ways to read BGSUHockey.com

By July 16, 2016Other News

It’s hard to believe, but we’re now under 80 days until the 2016-2017 campaign kicks off with an exhibition game against Windsor. Kevin just wrote a couple of posts to let you know about the Falcons’ incoming freshman, and earlier we gave you the slate of games that will challenge BG this year.

We’ve been working on some features behind the scenes to help keep our (self-appointed) title as one of the most innovative college hockey sites on the web. Our current push is to continue to keep our site and its information as “mobile friendly” as possible.

Facebook “Instant Articles”

First, we will start publishing our posts to Facebook utilizing their “Instant Articles” format. You may notice while perusing our Facebook page on your mobile device that links to our posts now feature a small lightning symbol in the upper right hand corner. This means that post is an instant article that will load immediately when tapped.

While our site is very mobile friendly, utilizing Facebook’s instant article will get you the full article without any of the other sections of our site. Sometimes you just want to quickly read one of our posts without heading to the site. Now you’ll be able to do just that within Facebook.

Google “AMP” Articles

Along these same lines we also now feature “AMP” compatible stories as well. AMP stands for accelerated mobile pages, which like Facebook makes it easier to read articles on your mobile device. If you’re searching Google for BGSU hockey stories, and come upon one of our posts you’ll be offered an instant article. These articles will be noted by featuring another lightning symbol and the letters AMP at the end of the title.

Clicking/tapping on that link will load a streamlined, mobile-friendly version of the post, but doesn’t require you to be logged in to Facebook or any other site.

Google News

We are now listed as an official news source for Google News. If you’re like me and utilize Google’s News Alerts this will be a great way to keep up with your Falcon hockey news. Alternatively, you can always head to News.Google.com and search for the latest BGSUHockey.com posts.

Examples of these new features are shown in the screenshots below. Have an idea for how we can make this site even better? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below.
