Columbus, OH – The Falcons find themselves going back to the drawing board after another disappointing game Saturday night. Bowling Green gave up six goals en route to a 6-1 loss to the Buckeyes.
Senior Tomas Sholl made his second appearance of the season, starting in net for the Falcons. He made 10 saves on 13 shots faced before being pulled in favor of Chris Nell with 4:04 to play in the first period. Nell stopped 13 of 17 shots faced.
Matt Tomkins received the start for Ohio State, stopping 28 shots on 29 Falcon attempts.
Ohio State opened the scoring at 5:38 while on the power play. Nick Schilkey fired a shot from an angle, beating Sholl who was moving to hug the post.
David Gust pushed the Buckeyes lead to 2-0 at 11:51 of the opening period. Gust skated in on Nell, flipped the puck behind him, through his legs, and finished a backhand shot for the highlight reel marker.
Ohio State pushed their lead to 3-0 at 15:56 on a two-on-one rush. Matthew Weis took a cross-slot pass from Josh Healey, scoring on a dribbling puck that beat Sholl underneath his pads.
Sholl was pulled after the Buckeyes third goal. He finished his night with 10 saves on 13 attempts in 15:56 of game action.
Ohio State had 14 shot attempts in the first period while Bowling Green had 10.
Ohio State scored their fourth goal 4:43 into the second period as Matt Joyaux finished a rebound from Ronnie Hein.
Bowling Green was finally able to get on the board at 7:48 of the second period. Frederic Letourneau left a drop-pass for Kevin Dufour, who found Pierre-Luc Mercier streaking up the slot. Mercier wristed a shot high, beating Tomkins over his shoulder. The goal was Mercier’s first of the season.
Ohio State had 10 shots in the second period while the Falcons had 11 chances.
Ohio State scored their fifth of the game at 8:07 of the third period. With the teams skating four-on-four, Drew Brevig passed to Matt Schilkey in the face-off circle. Schilkey’s shot beat Nell high for his second goal of the game. The Buckeyes added an insurance goal at 16:04 of the third period when Tanner Laczynski scored a tip-in marker to finalize the 6-1 victory.
Ohio State had six shots in the third period while Bowling Green had eight attempts on Tomkins.
With the loss the Falcons fall to 0-5-1 on the season, while Ohio State improves to 3-0-2. Bowling Green travels to Oxford next weekend for a pair of games again Miami.
