Bemidji, MN – A woefully slow start ended up being the Falcons undoing, and a late push wasn’t enough to hold off the Beavers who won 2-1 Friday night.
The Falcons started Chris Nell in net, who stopped 23 of 25 shots faced. Michael Bitzer got the nod for Bemidji State and stopped 20 shots in the victory.
The Beavers opened the scoring at 6:15 of the opening period on the power play.Gerry Fitzgerald fed the puck to the point to Zach Whitecloud. His wrist shot beat a screened Nell.
Bemidji State pushed the lead to 2-0 at 12:36 of the first period. Phillip Marinaccio raced down to collect a clearing attempt after a sustained Falcon rush. He found a streaking Myles Fitzgerald who had skated down the ice in the slot, one-timing the goal.
Chris Nell finished the first period with 11 saves on 13 shots faced. Michael Bitzer turned aside all seven shots he faced.
Neither team was able to find the net in the middle period. Bemidji State carried the play, however, outshooting Bowling Green 10 to two attempts.
Stephen Baylis got the Falcons on the board at 5:01 of the third period. Baylis was able to clean up a shot that had ringed off the far crossbar, poking the loose puck past the goal line. Chris Pohlkamp assisted on the Falcons goal.
With 1:47 to play in the period, while in a four-on-four situation, Chris Nell was pulled for an extra attacker. But, the Falcons weren’t able to find the equalizer and fell to the Beavers 2-1.
The Falcons outshot the Beavers 12-2 in the final period, with Nell stopping both attempts and Bitzer stopping 11 of 12.
