Marquette, MI – Bowling Green won their 900th game in program history Saturday in a 4-3 defeat of Northern Michigan. The game also marked the Falcons’ first sweep of the season.
Chris Nell started in net for the Falcons, stopping 26 of the 29 Wildcats shots he faced. Mathias Israelsson got the nod for the Wildcats, stopping seven of the ten Falcons attempts he saw. Atte Tolvanen replaced Israelsson after the Falcons’ third goal and made 8 saves on 10 shots faced.
Bowling Green struck first at 2:40 of the first period. Frederic Letourneau passed the puck from the wing to Matt Meier who was skating down the slot. Meier quickly wristed a shot to the far-side, beating Israelsson for Meier’s first goal as a Falcon.
Northern Michigan responded at 6:38 of the first period. Brendan Jacques re-directed a shot from the point by Jordan Limek. The Wildcats added their second goal at 13:17 of the first period. Filip Starzynski took a pass from Philip Beaulieu, then wristed the puck high beating Nell over his right shoulder.
Bowling Green tied the game up at 19:11 of the first period. Alec Rauhauser passed the puck across the blue line to Mark Friedman. The junior defenseman wound up and fired a rocket, beating Israelsson. The goal was Friedman’s fourth of the season.
The Falcons finished the opening period with just four shots on net, while the Wildcats had 14 shot attempts.
Bowling Green re-took the lead at 5:15 of the second period. Kevin Dufour skated the puck around the Northern Michigan net, wristing a wrap-around goal between Tolvanen’s legs for his first goal of the season. John Schilling and Connor McDonald assisted on the scoring play.
Mathias Israelsson was pulled after the Falcons’ third goal. He finished his night with seven saves on ten shots faced in 25:16 of action.
Northern Michigan tied the game back up at 18:34 of the middle period. Brock Maschmeyer buried a wrist shot from the deep slot past a screened Nell while the Wildcats were on the power play.
The Falcons finished the period with five shots attempted while the Falcons had ten shots on net.
Bowling Green took their third lead of the night at 9:33 of the third period. John Schilling collected a loose puck in the Falcons’ zone. He then skated the puck the length of the ice, beat a couple of Wildcat defenders, and buried a five-hole shot for his second goal of the season.
Matt Pohlkamp buried an empty net, power play goal at 18:51 to seal the 5-3 win for the Falcons.
The Falcons finished the third period with seven shots while the Wildcats 11.
With the win the Falcons improve to 4-7-1, 3-3-0-0. The Wildcats fall to 8-8-1, 1-6-1-0. Bowling Green will again be on the road next week, as they head south to play Alabama-Huntsville.
