Big Rapids, MI – The Falcons wrapped up their last road trip in the regular season poorly, getting shutout by Ferris State 5-0.
Chris Nell started in net for Bowling Green, making 30 saves on 35 shots faced. Justin Kapelmaster countered for Ferris State and stopped all 19 pucks faced. The scoreless effort was the first time this season the Falcons have been shutout.
Neither team was able to find the net in the first period, and Ferris State dominated the game in the early frame. The Bulldogs out-shot the Falcons 17-4 in the opening frame, with Nell having to start multiple closes chances.
Ferris State opened the game’s scoring at 2:51 of the second period. Taylor Fernandez found Jason Tackett on the backdoor across the crease for the Bulldogs’ goal.
The Bulldogs added their second goal at 8:59 of the second period. Mitch Maloney re-directed a pass from Jacob Hetz at the half-boards that beat Nell high.
Chad McDonald pushed the Ferris State lead to 3-0 at 18:24, and Gerald Mayhew scored a goal of his own at 19:31 to take a 4-0 lead into the locker room for the second intermission.
Ferris State again dominated the shots category with 15 chances in the middle period. The Falcons had just seven opportunities.
Jared VanWormer scored the game’s final goal at 12:14 with a one-time clapper from just inside the far face-off circle. That secured the 5-0 win for Ferris State.
The Falcons managed eight shots in the final period while the Bulldogs had three chances.
With the loss the Falcons fall to 14-15-2, 12-11-1-1. Ferris State improves to 9-16-4, 8-11-3-2.
Bowling Green will travel back home next weekend to welcome the Northern Michigan Wildcats.
