Bowling Green, OH – The Falcons were unable to solve the opposing goaltender for the second game in a row as they were shut out by the Northern Michigan Wildcats 3-0 Friday night.
Atte Tolvanen started in net for the Wildcats, stopping all 35 shots faced. Chris Nell got the start for the Falcons and stopped 20 of 22 shots faced.
Shane Sooth picked up the game’s first goal at 6:00 of the first period. The senior captain buried a wrist shot from the blocker side face-off dot while the Falcons were on a five-on-three disadvantage.
Zach Diamontoni picked up Northern Michigan’s second goal at 11:18 of the first period. Diamontoni finished a nice pass from Darien Craighead in the crease to extend the Wildcat lead to 2-0.
Bowling Green finished the first period with 11 shots on net, while Northern Michigan had 10 chances in the opening frame.
Te Falcons showed more offensive prowess in the middle frame as they challenged Tolvanen 16 times. However, the Wildcat goaltender handled the puck well on his way to another perfect period. The Falcons’ defense held the Wildcats to seven shots in the second period.
Robbie Payne scored an empty net goal with 52.9 seconds remaining to seal the 3-0 win for the Northern Michigan Wildcats.
The Falcons finished the third period with six shots on net while the Wildcats had eight attempts. With the loss Bowling Green falls to 14-16-2, 12-12-1-1. Northern Michigan improves to 8-17-4, 6-12-3-1. The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday at 7:07.
