Falcons earn 3-1 exhibition win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks

Bowling Green, OH – Bowling Green started their 2017-2018 campaign with a win Sunday, as they downed the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

Ryan Bednard started in net for the Falcons, stopping all 13 shots faced. Eric Dop relieved Bednard at 15:34 of the second period, stopping five of six shots faced. Colin Furlong countered for Wilfrid Laurier, stopping 27 shots on 29 attempts.

First Period

Casey Linkenheld opened the scoring at 14:20 of the first period. Connor McDonald fired a low slap shot from the point. Linkenheld managed to tip the puck, beating WLU’s Furlong. Cameron Wright had the secondary assist on the play.

The Falcons finished the first period with 13 shots on net, while Wilfrid Laurier had eight chances.

Second Period

The Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 at 9:02 of the second period with the Falcons skating on an extended five-minute power play. Jacob Dalton passed across the point to Adam Smith, who sent a shot towards the net. Mitch McLain was parked in the slot and tipped the puck into the net.

Ryan Bednard exited the game at 15:34 of the second period. He ended his period of work with five saves.

Wilfrid Laurier drew back to within one at 17:36 of the second period. Danny Hanlon beat Dop high after an assist from Brandon Robinson.

Bowling Green finished the second period with nine shots on net, while Wilfrid Laurier had six attempts.

Third Period

The Falcons weren’t able to put away the Golden Hawks until Mitch McLain scored an empty net goal at 19:38. Brandon Kruse and Frederic Letourneau assisted on the goal.

Bowling Green finished the period with eight shots on net, while Wilfrid Laurier had five attempts.

The Falcons will welcome the United States National Team Development Program this Friday at 7:37 PM for a second exhibition game.
