Mavericks throttle Falcons 4-1 to open WCHA play

Bowling Green, OH – The Falcons’ penalty kill struggled mightily Friday night, giving up three goals to give the Minnesota State Mavericks a 4-1 win to open conference play.

Eric Dop started in net for the Falcons, making 30 saves on 34 shots faced. Connor LaCouvee countered for the Mavericks, stopping 16 shots on 17 Falcon opportunities.

First Period

Minnesota State struck first at 5:49 of the first period on the power play. After winning the face-off, C.J. Suess passed to Parker Toumie in the slot. His shot from the slot hit the goal post, bounced back into Dop’s back, and trickled past the goal line.

The Falcons managed just six shots on net in the opening period, compared to the Mavericks 13.

Second Period

The Falcons tied the game at 3:24 of the second period. Max Johnson passed the puck from the corner to Shane Bednard who was behind the net. Bednard found Cam Wright parked in front of the net, who then buried a wrist shot for his third goal of the season.

The Mavericks regained the lead at 18:15 of the second period. Zeb Knutson’s wrist shot from the slot beat Dop over his glove, giving Minnesota State their second power play goal of the night.

Bowling Green struggled again in the middle period to produce offense, challenging LaCouvee with just five shots. The Mavericks had 11 chances in the second period.

Third Period

Minnesota State extended their lead to 3-1 at 8:05 of the third period. Connor Mackey’s wrist shot beat Dop high glove-side as he was skating across the slot. The goal came with the teams skating four-on-four.

The Mavericks took a 4-1 lead at 12:16 of the third period after C.J. Suess scored the Mavericks’ third and final power play goal of the game.

Bowling Green falls to 1-3-0, 0-1-0-0 on the season. Minnesota State improves to 3-1-0, 1-0-0-0. The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday at 7:07.
