Bowling Green continues their WCHA slate this weekend as they welcome the Alaska Nanooks. The Falcons are coming off a weekend split with the #12 Minnesota State Mavericks.

Alaska swept their rival, Alaska-Anchorage, last weekend.

They Said It

Here’s this week’s edition of Falcon Hockey Weekly with Chris Bergeron and Ryan Vallon:

Player Honors

Cam Wright was named the Jet’s Pizza Male Player of the Week by the BGSU athletic communication department.

Wright was also an honorable mention for the WCHA Rookie of the Week by the conference.

Wright continued

The freshman forward leads the Falcons in scoring with three goals and three assists. His six points tie with Steven Jandric (1-5-6), who will be coming to BGSU this weekend with the rest of the Nanooks, in freshmen scoring in the WCHA. He also sits at sixth in the nation for freshmen scoring.

WCHA in the Polls

Minnesota State moved up to #12 in this week’s USCHO poll, while Michigan Tech fell to #16. Bemidji State and Northern Michigan were unranked but received votes.

In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll Minnesota State was 14th. Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan received votes in the poll.

Scouting the Nanooks

Alaska is coached by first-year bench boss Lance West. They were picked to finish eighth by both the coaches and media in the WCHA preseason polls.

They’re led by Justin Woods and Ross Heidt with three goals apiece, while Steven Jandric leads the team with a +6 on-ice rating. Anton Martinsson is the only goalie with any playing time this year for the Nanooks. He’s struggled at times this season but did pick up his first two wins of the season this past weekend.

What’s a Nanook?

“Nanook is a derivation of nanuq, the Inupiaq word for polar bear. UAF’s very first basketball teams had been nicknamed the Polar Bears, but after 1963, the Polar Bears became known as the Nanooks, which has since applied to all UAF sports teams.” – Alaska athletic department
