Anchorage, AK – Despite racking up 40 penalty minutes, the Falcons’ penalty kill was perfect Friday on their five penalty kills to help earn 14th-ranked Bowling Green a weekend sweep over Alaska-Anchorage with a 2-1 win.
Eric Dop started in net for the Falcons, making 16 saves on 17 shots faced in his first action in four weeks. Olivier Mantha played for Alaska-Anchorage and had 20 stops on 22 chances.
Like the game on Thursday, neither team could find the net in the opening period. The Falcons had eight shots in the opening frame while the Seawolves had four chances.
The Falcons were expeditious getting on the board in the second period, as Connor Ford finished a pass from Lukas Craggs in the slot to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead just nine seconds into the second period. The goal was Ford’s sixth of the season.
The Seawolves responded at 19:06 of the second period. Alec Butcher sent a wrist shot on Dop who made the save. But, the puck popped straight in the air on the rebound, hit Dop’s back, and rolled across the goal line.
Bowling Green finished the second period with eight shots on net while Alaska-Anchorage had six shots in the middle frame.
Bowling Green re-took the lead at 12:19 of the third period. After forcing a turnover in the neutral zone Brandon Kruse skated into the Seawolves’ zone. He found Tyler Spezia at the opposite wing who unleashed a rocket, beating Mantha for his 10th goal of the season.
The Seawolves had a power play chance with 19 seconds to play, but couldn’t find the equalizer to give the Falcons the 2-1 win.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 19-9-6, 16-5-5-2 while the Seawolves fall to 2-26-4, 2-21-3-3.
