Bowling Green, OH – The 20th-ranked Falcons enjoyed their return home after traveling over 1,200 miles to start the season. They downed the Robert Morris Colonials by a score of 6-0 Sunday night at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
Ryan Bednard picked up his fifth career shutout as he stopped all 33 shots faced. Francis Marotte had 23 saves on 29 Falcon opportunities before being replaced by Dyllan Lubbesmeyer in the third period. Lubbesmeyer had four saves in relief.
Bowling Green struck first at 6:50 of the first period. Carson Musser carried the puck into the Colonials’ zone sending a shot on net. His rebound came to Lukas Craggs who sent the puck into the wide-open net for his second goal of the season. Connor McDonald had the second assist on the play.
The Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 at 7:53 of the first period. While skating on the power play, Brandon Kruse passed the puck to Max Johnson in the far faceoff circle. Johnson found Connor Ford in the near circle, who sent a shot high that Marotte wasn’t able to stop enough of. The goal was Ford’s third of the season.
Bowling Green finished the first period with eight shots on net while Robert Morris had seven chances.
Brandon Kruse picked up his first goal of the season at 9:47 of the second period. With the Falcons on the power play, Kruse skated around the Robert Morris zone before finding a shooting lane in the deep slot. His wrist shot beat a screened Marotte over his far shoulder to give Bowling Green a 3-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Max Johnson and Cam Wright.
John Schilling picked up his first goal of the season at 16:35 of the second period. Alex Barber created a two-on-one rush and Schilling collected the loose puck. He found Sam Craggs across the crease, but Craggs sent a pass right back to Schilling who put the puck into the open net.
The Falcons had 15 shots on net and held the Colonials to just two chances in the middle frame.
The Falcons extended their lead to 5-0 at 11:45 of the third period on the power play. Connor McDonald fired a shot wide that rebounded off the backboards. The puck came to Brandon Kruse who buried the shot for his second goal of the game.
Bowling Green added another goal at 12:10 of the third period. Jacob Dalton sent a shot on net that was deflected by Casey Linkenheld, beating Marotte for his third goal of the season.
Francis Marotte was pulled for Dyllan Lubbesmeyer after Linkenheld’s goal. He finished with 23 saves in 52:03 of time.
Neither team found the net after Linkenheld’s goal to seal the win and shutout for the Falcons.
The Falcons finished the third period with 10 shots on net while the Colonials had six chances.
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 3-1-0, 0-0-0-0 on the season. Robert Morris falls to 1-1-0, 0-0-0-0.
Bowling Green will next take the ice on 10/23 at home against Western Michigan.
