Bowling Green, OH – The ninth-ranked Falcons’ opened WCHA league play with a 3-1 win over Northern Michigan Friday.
Ryan Bednard started in net for the Falcons, stopping 22 of 23 shots faced. Atte Tolvanen had 24 saves on 27 attempts for Northern Michigan.
Bowling Green opened the game’s scoring at 8:52 of the first period. Lukas Craggs laid out a reverberating hit that separated the puck from a Wildcat. Stephen Baylis found Taylor Schneider across the ice, who one-timed a slapper past Tolvanen for his second goal of the season.
The Falcons finished the first period with eight shots on net while the Wildcats had seven chances.
The Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 at 2:14 of the second period. Brandon Kruse skated the puck into the Wildcats’ zone as play returned to five-on-five following a pair of penalties on Sam Craggs for Bowling Green and Griffin Loughran for Northern Michigan. Kruse left a trailer to Sam Craggs who rang the doorbell off the post, then netted the rebound attempt for his second goal of the season. Chris Pohlkamp had the secondary assist on the scoring play.
The Wildcats cut the Falcons’ lead to 2-1 at 11:28 of the second period when Troy Loggins scored a one-timer from the point on the power play.
Bowling Green had 12 shots in the second period while Northern Michigan had seven chances.
Brandon Kruse scored a two-way goal at 12:48 of the third period to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead. Kruse forced a turnover just inside the Wildcats’ zone, skated the length of the ice, and send the puck past Tolvanen for his third goal of the season.
Kruse’s goal would be the game’s final, earning the Falcons a 3-1 win.
Northern Michigan had nine shots in the final period while Bowling Green had seven.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-1-0, 1-0-0-0 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 2-5-0, 1-2-0-0. The teams will conclude their weekend series on Saturday at 7:07 PM.
