#10 Falcons hold off late Huskies rush in 3-2 win

Houghton, MI –¬†The 10th-ranked Falcons blew a two-goal lead in the third period, but re-took the lead a few minutes later to earn a 3-2 win over Michigan Tech Saturday.

Eric Dop stopped 34 of 36 shots faced for the Falcons. Robbie Beydoun had 27 saves on 30 chances for the Huskies.

First Period

The Falcons opened the game’s scoring at 6:55 of the first period. Bowling Green forced a turnover in the Huskies’ zone, sending the puck to the far half boards. Chris Pohlkamp pinched in, sending a pass on net to John Schilling. The senior forward re-directed the puck just past Beydoun for his third goal of the season.

Bowling Gren doubled their lead at 15:52 of the first period. Will Cullen left the puck fro Cam Wright along the boards, who fired a shot towards the Huskies’ net. Alex Barber contorted his body to get his stick on the puck, re-directing it past Beydoun. The goal was Barber’s third of the season.

The Falcons had a 13-9 shot advantage in the first period.

Second Period

Neither team scored in the second period and Bowling Green held a slight 9-8 shot advantage.

Third Period

The Huskies scored a pair of goals 17 seconds apart to tie the game at 2-2 in the third period. Tyler Rockwell’s shot from the point (7:55) and Thomas Beretta’s snipe (8:12) over Dop’s glove equalized the score.

But, the Falcons retook the lead at 11:26 of the third period. Tim Theocharidis ripped a strong shot on net that deflected off Alex Barber’s skate and past Beydoun. The power-play goal was Barber’s second of the game and was also assisted by Will Cullen.

Michigan Tech pulled Beydoun for an extra-attacker with 1:23 to play in the third period. But, the Falcons held off the late push to earn the 3-2 win.

The Huskies had 19 shots in the final period while the Falcons managed eight chances on net.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 15-5-3, 10-4-2-2 on the season. The Huskies fall to 11-11-2, 10-5-1-1.

Bowling Green will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska next weekend to face the Nanooks.
