Bowling Green, OH – The 12th-ranked Falcons held off the Bemidji State Beavers Friday night in a 3-1 win. With the win, Head Coach Chris Bergeron matched the late, great, Hall of Famer Ron Mason for second-most wins in program history (160).
Ryan Bednard stopped 24 shots on 25 attempts for Bowling Green while Zach Driscoll had 21 saves on 23 attempts.
The Falcons opened the game’s scoring at 2:13 of the opening period. Frederic Letourneau laid a heavy hit on a Beaver, separating him from the puck. Letourneau centered a pass to Brandon Kruse who re-directed the pass past Driscoll for his seventh goal of the season.
Bowling Green doubled their lead just a few moments later at 5:30 of the first period. John Schilling skated in past the goal line before sending a pass to Taylor Schneider in the slot. Schneider’s shot beat Driscoll on his blocker side for his fifth goal of the season. Jacob Dalton had the second assist on the scoring play.
Bemidji State cut the Falcons’ lead to 2-1 at 19:54 of the opening period. Justin Baudry squeezed a shot between Bednard and the near post on the Beavers’ third power play of the period.
The Falcons finished the first period with ten shots on net while the Beavers had five shots on net.
Despite power-play chances for both sides, neither team found the net in the second period.
Both teams had nine chances in the middle frame.
It was another back-and-forth period with neither team finding the net until the last few minutes. The Beavers pulled Driscoll for an extra-attacker with under two minutes to play, but Connor Ford scored an empty-net goal thanks to an assist by Stephen Baylis to seal the 3-1 win.
Bemidji State had 11 shots in the third period while Bowling Green had five chances.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 14-4-3, 9-3-2-2 on the season. The Beavers fall to 9-10-3, 7-6-1-0.
Bowling Green will travel to Houghton, Michigan next weekend to face the Michigan Tech Huskies.
