Bowling Green, OH – A weekend off seemed to be just what the 16th-ranked Falcons needed. They picked up eight goals for the third time this season in an 8-0 win over Alaska.
Gustavs Grigals started in net for the Nanooks, stopping six of nine shots faced before being pulled at 8:55 of the first period. Anton Martinsson had 25 saves on 30 chances in relief.
Ryan Bednard stopped all 14 shots faced for the Falcons.
The Falcons opened the game’s scoring at 6:30 of the first period. Cam Wright forced a turnover in the Nanooks’ zone then sent a pass across the zone to Stephen Baylis. The senior captain made a series of moves around the Nanooks’ defender before finishing a backhanded shot for his seventh goal of the season.
Bowling Green extended their lead to 2-0 at 8:38 of the opening period on the power play. Brandon Kruse’s pass from behind the goal line found the swinging stick of Cam Wright. The one-time shot beat Grigals for Wright’s seventh goal of the season.
Just 17 seconds later the Falcons found the net. Sam Craggs skated the puck down the half-boards then found Taylor Schneider all alone in front of Grigals. Schneider went forehand, backhand, and elevtated the shot over the Nanooks’ netminder.
The Falcons’ third goal ended Grigals’ night with six saves on nine attempts in 8:55 of action.
Bowling Green capped the period’s scoring at 19:25 of the first period. Lukas Craggs thread a pass through traffic to Will Cullen who had pinched up to the slot. Cullen flipped a shot high, tucking in just under the crossbar. The goal was also assisted by Alec Rauhauser.
The Falcons finished the first period with 14 shots on net while the Nanook had three chances.
Bowling Green extended their lead to 5-0 at 6:15 of the second period. Connor Ford left the puck for Sam Craggs, who skated in down the goal line and buried a wrist shot over Martinsson.
A shorthanded goal at 8:47 gave the Falcons a 6-0 lead. Jacob Dalton had just finished serving a penalty for elbowing and chased down a loose puck across the ice. Dalton skated in and beat Martinsson with a wrist shot that beat Martinsson high over his glove.
The Falcons had nine shots in the middle frame while the Nanooks had five.
Sam Craggs tallied his second goal of the night at 2:23 of the third period. Craggs skated in on Martinsson and forced a backhanded chance through the Nanook’s goalie five-hole for his sixth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by John Schilling and Connor McDonald.
Bowling Green pushed their lead to 8-0 at 5:01 of the third period. John Schilling found Frederic Letourneau with a backhanded centering pass. Letourneau beat Martinsson for his third goal of the season. This capped the game’s scoring.
Bowling Green had 13 shots in the final period while Alaska had 6.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 19-8-3, 14-7-2-2. The Nanooks fall to 9-18-2, 9-13-1-1. The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday at 7:07 PM.
