Sault Ste. Marie, MI – While the #10 Falcons’ offense was anemic Friday night, their defense and goaltending was suffocating in a 2-0 win over Lake Superior.
Eric Dop stopped all 26 shots he faced for the Falcons, while Mareks Mitens turned aside 35 of 36 Falcon attempts for the Lakers.
First Period
Despite a couple of power-play chances, the Falcons were unable to find the net in the first period and the teams went to the first intermission scoreless.
Bowling Green had 11 chances in the opening period while Lake Superior had 5 shots.
Second Period
The Falcons finally cracked Mitens with a power-play goal at 13:19 of the second period. Alec Rauhauser skated the puck along the boards before moving it to Brandon Kruse behind the net. Kruse fed a pass to Max Johnson in the deep slot who unleased a big slap shot, beating Mitens over his right shoulder. The goal was Johnson’s seventh of the season.
Bowling Green had 15 attempts in the middle frame while Lake Superior had eight chances on net.
Third Period
Lake Superior pulled Mitens for an extra attacker with just under three minutes to play but it was Cam Wright who would take advantage, scoring his 12th goal of the season on the empty net.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 12-5-1, 6-3-1-1 on the season. The Lakers fall to 5-15-1, 3-9-1-1. The teams will conclude their weekend series on Saturday at 7:07 PM.
