Matt Pohlkamp’s pair of points pace BG 4-1 over Alaska

Fairbanks, AK –¬†The Falcons had an excellent bounceback effort Saturday as they handled the Nanooks 4-1 at the Carlson Center.

The Falcons started Chris Nell in net who made 21 saves on 22 attempts. The Nanooks went with Jesse Jenks who stopped 21 of 25 shots faced.

First Period

Sean Walker opened the scoring for the Falcons at 15:59 of the first period. After taking a pass from Brent Tate, Tyler Spezia passed the puck back to the point to Walker. The Falcon Captain skated into the high slot and wristed his shot high, beating Jenks for a power play goal.

The Falcons finished the first period with eight shots on Jenks, scoring one goal. The Nanooks had 11 shots in the opening period with no goals.

Second Period

The Falcons pushed their lead to 2-0 at 3:46 of the second period. Stephen Baylis wristed a shot from near the point. The puck found Matt Pohlkamp’s stick, who was skating across the slot. The shot deflected off Pohlkamp’s blade, beating Jenks five-hole. The goal gave Pohlkamp his 19th point of the season, which leads the Falcons.

Mark Cooper gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead at 14:09 of the second period. Matt Pohlkamp found Mark Cooper, who wristed a shorthanded goal between two Nanook defenders.

Third Period

Joe McKeown scored his second career goal at 3:16 of the third period. The freshman forward took a beautiful pass from the corner from Mark Friedman, and buried a shot on the doorstop.

The Nanooks finally found the net at 11:22 of the third period. A pass deflected off Colton Sparrow’s skate and fell right to Marcus Basara’s stick on the back door. Basara found an open net for his seventh goal of the season.

The Nanook goal would be the final score of the game as the Falcons picked up the 4-1 win. The Falcons finsihed the third period with four shots on Jenks. The Nanooks had eight shots in the final frame.

With the win the Falcons improve to 17-11-6, 13-6-5 on the season, and move into a tie with Michigan Tech for second place in the WCHA. The Nanooks fall to 8-18-4, 6-14-4.

Bowling Green will face Ferris State at the BGSU Ice Arena next weekend in the Falcons’ final regular season series at home.
