Marquette, MI – Scoring by committee was the theme of Friday’s game as the Falcons used five different goal scorers to thrash Northern Michigan 5-1.
Chris Nell started in net for the Falcons, making 24 saves on 25 shots faced. Atte Tolvanen received the start for Northern Michigan, stopping 25 of the 30 Falcon chances he faced.
First Period
The Falcons struck first at 4:44 of the opening period. Pierre-Luc Mercier passed the puck down to the opposite face-off circle to Brett D’Andrea. The junior forward settled the puck, and fed Sean Walker back to the point. Walker fired a blast, beating Tolvanen for his fourth goal of the season.
Bowling Green pushed their lead to 2-0 at 14:26 of the first period. Kevin Dufour skated the puck from the boards to the slot, then wristed a shot towards Tolvanen. The puck deflected off Frederic Letourneau on the doorstop, slipping behind Tolvanen.
BG tacked on their third goal at 17:24 of the first period. Stephen Baylis left the puckĀ for Matt Pohlkamp. The senior assistant captain one-timed a hard shot that stayed low, beating Tolvanen five-hole. The goal was Pohlkamp’s fifth of the season.
The Falcons finished the period with 15 shots on Tolvanen. The Wildcats managed just six shots on Nell.
Second Period
The Wildcats got their first marker at 5:44 of the second period. Troy Loggins managed to get a shot between Nell’s legs from an obtuse angle.
The Falcons managed just four shots in the middle frame while Northern Michigan had seven opportunities.
Third Period
The Falcons extended their lead to 4-1 at 9:47 of the third period. Tyler Spezia skated the puck along the boards then passed the puck towards the net. Brett D’Andrea re-directed Spezia’s pass, squeezing the puck between Tolvanen and the near post. The goal was D’Andrea’s second of the season.
Mitch McLain scored the Falcons final goal at 15:13. Matt Pohlkamp wristed a shot on Tolvanen that settled in the crease. Mitch McLain crashed the net, chopping the puck under Tolvanen’s pad for his fourth goal of the season. Stephen Baylis was given the second assist on the scoring play.
The Falcons finished the third period with 10 shots on net. The Wildcats had 13 attempts.
With the win Bowling Green improves to 3-7-1, 2-3-0-0 on the season. The Wildcats fall to 3-7-1, 1-5-1-0. The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday at 7:07.
