Hamden, CT – After an 18-hour bus ride it could be expected the 13th-ranked Falcons could suffer a slow start. But, Bowling Green rode a two-goal opening period to a 4-1 win over #11 Quinnipiac Friday night.
Zack Rose started in net for the Falcons, stopping 23 of 24 shots faced. Detroit Red Wings prospect Keith Petruzzelli turned aside 35 of 37 attempts faced.
Bowling Green opened the game’s scoring at 14:19 of the first period. Alex Barber re-directed a blue line shot from Tim Theocharidis to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The goal was Barber’s fifth of the season and was also assisted by Taylor Schneider.
The Falcons extended their lead to 2-0 with another power-play goal at 19:30 of the opening period. Taylor Schneider sent a pass on net looking for a deflection. The puck caught the skate of a Bobcat, re-directing into the net for Schneider’s second goal of the season. Barber and Sam Craggs assisted on the play.
Bowling Green dominated the game’s first period, outshooting Quinnipiac 17-2.
Neither team found the net in the second period as the Falcons outshot the Bobcats 11-5 in the middle frame.
At 12:56 Quinnipiac chose to pull their goalie to take advantage of a Falcon penalty kill. But, it was Evan Dougherty who took advantage. His shot from the Falcons’ zone found the evacuated cage for his second goal of the season. Connor Ford assisted on the play.
The Bobcats cut the Falcons’ lead to 3-1 at 14:57 of the third period. Nick Bochen’s blast beat a screened Rose for his second goal of the season.
Bowling Green would respond again at 17:32. Brandon Kruse potted an empty-net goal to push the Falcons’ lead to 4-1. Cam Wright and Carson Musser assisted on the game’s final goal.
The Bobcats outshot the Falcons 17-11 in the third period.
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 7-1-0 on the season while Quinnipiac falls to 2-1-0. The teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday at 7:00 PM.
