Bowling Green, OH – Despite tripling the shots on net of the Lakers, the 18th-ranked Falcons fell short in a 2-1 loss to Mercyhurst Saturday.
Bemidji State transfer Hank Johnson started in net for the Lakers, stopping 38 of 39 shots faced. Zack Rose turned aside 11 of 13 attempts for the Falcons
The Lakers opened the game’s scoring at 4:11 of the opening period. Justin Cmunt’s one-timer on the power play beat Rose to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead. Steven Ipri and Austin Heidemann assisted on the play.
Bowling Green held a narrow 8-7 shot lead in the first period.
The Falcons peppered Johnson with a glut of shots but were unable to find the net in the second period. BG finished with 21 shots in the middle frame while the Lakers managed just a pair of chances.
Mercyhurst extended their lead to 2-0 at 1:01 of the third period. While skating on a five-on-three power play Cade Townsend blasted a one-timer past Rose from the far face-off dot to double the Lakers’ lead.
The Falcons finally broke through at 18:37 of the third period with an extra attacker. Evan Dougherty blasted a one-timer through traffic, beating Johnson for his first goal of the season. Gavin Gould and T.J. Lloyd assisted on the goal.
Bowling Green pulled Rose again for an extra attacker but were unable to find the equalizer, falling 2-1.
With the loss, the Falcons move to 3-1-0 on the season. The Lakers improve to 1-0-0.
The teams will conclude their home-and-home series Sunday at 3:05 PM.
